We're baaaack...HAPPY JUNETEENTH!
Season 2 of The Black Ordinary Podcast out now!
Hello and Happy Juneteenth, beautiful people!
May you celebrate today by doing whatever the hell you want! (Rest, go out, stay in…the ancestors have declared that the freedom of choice is yours!)
If you’ve been a subscriber for a while, you’ll notice this is the first newsletter in your inbox since November 2025…🫣 (Thank you for your grace and patience; ya girl has been busy catching up on life!)
However, the project kept g(r)o(w)ing and celebrated two incredible milestones!
March 2025
The Black Ordinary turned one! A whole 365 days of platforming Black art, Black archives, and Black autonomy! It’s incredible to have seen this project go from idea to execution and I’m so grateful for all of the love and support. I know that Jessie Sampleton Mayberry (my great-grandmother, whose stories inspired the project) is beaming with pride from the ancestral plane.
June 2025
I was invited to Charleston, South Carolina to speak about The Black Ordinary on a panel at the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture’s Archive Symposium! The symposium, titled “Those Who Have Must Turn Around and Give” brought together Black archivists and Black memory workers from all over the country to exchange ideas in honor of The Avery’s 40th anniversary.

AND IT KEEPS GOING…
Season 2: Episode 1 of The Black Ordinary Podcast is OUT NOW!
I am so excited to kick off the second season of The Black Ordinary Podcast with the incredible Julia Craven.

Cheers to freedom and cheers to every opportunity we get to honor our ancestors for more than just their sacrifices.
Stay Black and stay safe!
